Getting to Nara

The most convenient international air facility in the Nara area is Kansai International Airport (KIX, www.kansai-airport.or.jp/english/index.htm), which is 40 km southwest of Osaka City. KIX has direct flights not only to many cities in Asia but also to cities in Europe and the United States.

Transportation to Nara from the airport is available in many forms, but the most reliable way for travelers from outside Japan may be to take an airport bus (www.kate.co.jp/pc/english/english.html). These buses commute between the airport and Nara Station (JR/ Kintetsu) almost every hour from 07:40 to 20:40, and the one-way trip takes about 80 minutes.

If you travel to Nara from Tokyo, the best way is by JR Tokaido Shin-kansen train to Kyoto Station (2 hours and 20 minutes, one way). You will need to change trains at Kyoto for the short ride (35-40 minutes) to Nara. Miyakoji rapid trains operate every 30 minutes between Kyoto and Nara. You can get a discount ticket gJapan Rail Passh allowing unlimited rail travel throughout Japan over a consecutive day period (see www.japanrail.com) .
