"Noh" Play
|
|
Thursday, November 20 13:30-14:30
Hall A
Noh is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed
since the 14th century. It evolved from various popular folk and aristocratic
art forms. Kan'ami and his son Zeami brought Noh to its present-day form
during the 14-16th centuries under the patronage of the powerful Shogun.
Although each Noh actor, musician, and choral chanter practices independently,
the tempo of a given performance is established by the interactions of
all the performers together. Noh exemplifies the traditional Japanese aesthetics
of transience. There are approximately 250 plays in the current repertoire,
and todayfs play is gHagoromoh (The Robe of Feathers).
